Independence Day in Northern Virginia

Independence Day is coming up next week and I have a few ideas for you on where you can celebrate it.  These places all have great fireworks displays, but my favorite place is always in front of that guy’s house in the neighborhood who drove to the fireworks store in Pennsylvania to get the good ones.  The 4th is a great day to hang out with neighbors watching small fireworks and having a few cold drinks and whatever you like to put on the grill.  But if you aren’t doing that, here are a few ideas for you:

  1. The National Mall.  You can drive or Metro down to the Mall and claim your spot early in the day.  But the smart play here is to take advantage of the free parking at the Pentagon.  From there you can walk across the bridge to see the show or even bring bikes and ride over through the closed streets on the 4th.  A lot of people also just bring lawn chairs and enjoy the view from the Pentagon.  Pro Tip:  park near the exits and you’ll get back home much quicker after it ends.  See details here.

  2. Fairfax City.  Fairfax City has events during the day and at night that are a lot of fun for all ages.  It starts with a 10am parade that has a lot of local groups and bands.  It ends after dark with a very good firework display at Fairfax High School.  Details here.

  3. Vienna.  Vienna has food trucks and bands that start at 6pm at Yeonas Park.  After dark the fireworks will fly.  Details here.

We wish you a happy Independence Day.  Our hope is that for at least a day, we can put our differences behind and celebrate our country together.  We hope you enjoy the people you get to celebrate with.  We feel privileged to live so close to our nation’s capital; we hope you do as well.
